Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute (hereafter called as SMDERI) located in Shanghai, P. R. China was founded in 1963 and under the jurisdiction of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and now is the sole national level research center on marine diesel engines in China. SMDERI owns his strategic business sectors as Diesel Engine, Stirling Engine, Power System Integration, Marine Automation System, Energy Saving & Environmental Protection Equipment, Energy Service, etc.

Since 1990s, SMDERI has been engaged in R&D on energy saving & environmental protection in the industries of petrochemical, chemical, clean energy and is specialized in R&D, design & engineering, technical service and EPC contracting service in the above mentioned industries. In 1994, SMDERI completed the EPC project of first flare system independently developed by Chinese supplier for Shanghai Coke & Chemical General Plant;

In 1998, Qiayo Energy built the first water-heat-medium air preheater resistant to low temperature corrosion in China for the power plant of SinoPec Changling Company;

In 2000, Qiayo Energy built the first enclosed ground flare in China in Chaozhou, Guangdong province;

In April, 2000, the CO waste heat boiler of 1.4MT/A catalytic cracking unit of SinoPec Jinan Company was put into formal operation after SMDERI finished the reconstruction process aiming for corrosion prevention and energy saving, which was the first waste heat boiler designed and supplied by SMDERI in petrochemical industry;

In 2006, the first demountable elevated flare with multiple risers on one derrick support of independent intellectual property in China was built by SMDERI for Hainan Shihua Refinery & Chemicals Co. Ltd.;

In April, 2007, new waste heat boiler designed and supplied by SMDERI for 500,000t/y catalytic unit of SinoPec Zhanjiang Dongxin Petrochemical Company was put into operation. This project uses horizontal serpentine tube evaporator of natural circulation for the first time, which was also the first application of this technology in the catalytic waste heat boiler in China;

In May, 2008, the combustion type waste heat boiler for 1.2MT/A catalytic unit that SMDERI was the EPC contractor was put into formal operation at CNPC Huabei Company. It was the first waste heat boiler with insulating furnace and additional fuel built by SMDERI and the first application of lined modules;

In 2010, SMDERI built the regenerative thermal oxidizer for the 400,000t/y ABS unit of Tianjin Dagu Chemical Co. Ltd.;

In 2011, the flammable gas staging combustion system and operation won the silver award in the 20^th Invention Exhibition;

In 2011, SMDERI built the waste gas/liquid thermal oxidizer handling waste liquid with high nitrogen content for Dalian Sumika Jingang Chemicals Co. Ltd.;

In 2012, SMDERI built the first open ground flare with independent intellectual property in China for Ninbo Heyuan Chemicals Co. Ltd., and built the first demountable elevated flare with 6 flare risers at two opposite sides at the same derrick support in China for SinoPec Shijiazhuang Company;

In 2012, as a breakthrough in the thermal oxidizer business, SMDERI built the first thermal oxidizer with waste gas preheated so as to reduce the fuel consumption for Nantong HITACHI Chemicals Co. Ltd., the first thermal oxidizer handling salt-containing waste liquid with sodium salt crystallization device for emission post-treatment for BDO unit and the first cyclone incinerator handling waste gas containing coal particles for the acetylene unit of Chongqing Chiyuan Chemical Industry Co. Ltd.;

In November, 2012, the catalytic waste heat boiler with de-NOx and de-SOx system designed and supplied by SMDERI for the 1.8MT/A heavy oil catalytic unit was put into formal operation at SinoPec Zhenghai Refining & Chemicals Co. Ltd. As the first catalytic waste heat boiler with de-NOx and de-SOx system, it leads the new trend of the de-NOx and de-SOx reconstruction of catalytic units in China;

In 2012, the “steam-assist flare burner” won the gold award of China International Exhibition of Inventions; “flammable gas staging combustion system and operation” won the second prize of Sci-tech achievement of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation; “10t/h hydrogen boiler device” won the third prize of Sci-tech achievement of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and the third prize of China Machinery Industry Science and Technology award;

In February 2013, the thermal oxidizer designed and supplied by SMDERI for the BDO unit of SinoPec Yizheng Chemical Fibre Company Ltd. was put into formal operation and it boasts the largest capacity in similar devices handling waste gas, liquid and solid in China up till now;

In 2013, SMDERI built an advanced manufacturing center for plate heat exchangers in China;

In 2013, SMDERI received an order for four 2000t/d integrated burners from Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group Ltd., which represented that the integrated burners for top-injected coal gasifier independently developed by SMDERI was recognized by the market;

In November 2014, “Open ground flare” won the first prize of Sci-tech achievement of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation;

In October 2015, SMDERI signed a contract with SinoPec Jiujiang Company and made the first attempt to reconstruct the coal fired boiler to gas fired boiler; in addition, SMDERI signed the contract with SinoPec Jiujiang Company to built a low grade heat power generation project with an installed capacity of 1600kW, which is, in terms of hot water power generation, the largest unit capacity in China;

In 2015, “unstable combustion critical technology research and engineering application of pulverized coal gasifier” won the first prize of Sci-tech achievement of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.

SMDERI now has some 2000 employees in total , including over 920 professional engineers and technicians. Qualified to provide doctoral programs, SMDERI boasts 26 doctor and/or master supervisors and a post doctoral research station. In terms of educaiton degree, there are 2% doctors, 31% masters, 39% bachelors, 11% college graduates and 17% other degrees. While in terms of technical title, there are 9% professors, 21% senior engineers, 29% engineers, 38% assistant engineers and 3% other titles. Of all the employess, there are 238 employees directly related to the energy equipment sector, including over 160 professional engineers and technicians.
